In February 7, 1946 National Board of Commissars of the Latvian Soviet Republic made a decision to establish Institute of Animal Husbandry and Zoo Hygiene as a branch of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Now it is renamed as Agency of Latvian Agricultural Academy Research Institute of Biotechnology and Veterinary Medicine Sigra. On May, 1956 the institute started to work under subordination of the Latvian Agricultural Ministry. In June 2, 1956 Ministry issued an order to establish Latvian Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science which was developed on the basis of Institute of Animal Husbandry and Zoo Hygiene. Since 1963 Institute found its accommodation in Sigulda. Several scientific and production associations started their activities during 80-ies of the previous century, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science and Production Association Sigra was among them. Its Statute was ratified in May 28, 1986. Latvian Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science was leading organization of the Association. Association Sigra included also Agricultural Research Company Krimulda, Research Farm Sigulda, Cattle Breeding Experimental Stations Jaunpils, Latgale, Lielplatone, Experimental Production Laboratory Sigfarm and later on Research Station of Animal Husbandry Aiviekste.
Rebirth of the Republic of Latvia carried alternations in many structures: in July 19, 1991 Latvian Agricultural Ministry made an order to reorganize Science and Production Association Sigra, consequently it became Latvian State Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science Sigra retaining name Sigra and inheriting its former liabilities and rights. Research farms and other structures were privatized. In September 1, 1997 Contract of Integration with Latvia University of Agriculture was signed in compliance with the law On scientific activities and Higher Education Law. In October 8, 1997 Cabinet of Ministers issued an order About reorganization of Latvian State Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science Sigra and since January 1, 1998 State non-profit scientific enterprise Scientific Centre Sigra joined Latvia University of Agriculture as an independent structural unit with rights of a legal person.
